Guwahati: After a gap of two years, protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, also known as the CAA, resumed in the northeastern regions on Wednesday.

The All Assam Students Union had organized a meeting against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Likewise, the North-Eastern Students’ Organization staged a protest across the state. The police stopped the rally organized by the Assam Students Association.

According to reports, in the current situation in the northeastern states, various protests may take place in the coming days to draw attention to this issue.

According to reports, protests may also be held on other issues such as addressing the issue of illegal immigrants, implementation of the Assam Accord, counter-terrorism measures, withdrawal of the Special Armed Forces Act from all North-Eastern states, and the log-in card scheme announced in Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura.

Protests started in Assam last year against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. The struggle continued until the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

Earlier, on December 11, 2019, the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act was passed in Parliament. According to this, some amendments were made in Indian Citizenship Act 1955 to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis who immigrated illegally from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan before December 31, 2014. However, there was a controversy that Muslims were not mentioned in this law.
