In the climate of gloom, sadness and fatigue brought by the combination of heat, fires, unjust deaths and disasters, a mood of nihilism is rewarded. The impression that the country is a wild vine and the floating destabilization conspiracy favor all those elements that hold the country and society back.

Disasters, accidents and mishandling will always happen. They happened, they are happening and they will happen. And the responsibility remains intact. Experience prevents and planning prevents the worst. But beyond all that we ordinary citizens fail to know from the inside and content ourselves with tasting what the news brings us, there remains a sense of frustration.

This abort, as inevitable as it is under extreme conditions, is also unnecessary. The frustration that many Greeks feel in front of their screens or in private conversations, is intensified by the uncertainty of what the rest of the summer might bring or “what might be hidden behind all this”.

What is certain is that the tendency of the Greek to blame with ease and dogmatism when everything seems to be going wrong reveals an inability to appreciate reality. And the reality is a mix of positives and negatives, people in the wrong place, people with wrong handling and people struggling with knowledge and responsibility.

In times of extreme conditions such as the last ten days, the Greek often becomes his own enemy. We highlight the amazing offer and mobilization of the citizens of Rhodes to underline mainly everything that should have been foreseen. I wish everything was that simple. Disasters should unite society, not tear it apart. The sport of anti-Hellenism is ancient in this place. Anti-Hellenism is to constantly blame your country, inside and outside, often with party identity, political criteria and personal repulsions.

Disasters can mobilize the healthy forces of composition and isolate those who merely shout and point the finger without ever having assumed a position of responsibility in their lives.

We are all sorry for what happened. But the country has to move forward with compositions and a lot of work. In Greece, unfortunately, we spend more time in chatter and less time in self-criticism. Let’s go even a little further.
