Anti-Migrant Activist Daniel Thomas Charged for Slashing Channel Dinghy

Anti-migrant activist Daniel Thomas was arrested and charged with criminal damage after being filmed slashing an inflatable dinghy in the English Channel while a rescue worker was aboard, prompting protests outside a Hampshire police station as the government reported the highest number of small boat arrivals for a single day so far this year.

The Channel Incident and Police Charges

The arrest unfolded after the far-right agitator and anti-migrant activist Daniel Thomas tracked two migrant dinghies traveling from France to the UK. Operating from a boat, Thomas livestreamed his pursuit to more than 200,000 viewers, capturing footage of himself approaching an empty inflatable craft.

In the video footage, Thomas said that let’s get rid of that boat. After an emergency responder climbed aboard the vessel, Thomas said that get off the boat. You’ve got time to get off the boat. before his craft sped away.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed that a 37-year-old man of no fixed abode was taken into custody. Police charged Thomas with criminal damage and failing to disclose the PIN to his phone.

Hampshire Police stated that the charges follow an allegation made to police that damage had been caused to a boat in the Channel whilst an emergency responder was on board, according to Yahoo News.

Thomas was remanded in custody to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning.

Protests Erupt Outside Basingstoke Police Station

News of the arrest drew several hundred demonstrators to the investigation centre in Basingstoke on Thursday evening. The gathering began shortly before 18:30 BST, with many participants dressed in black clothing and some covering their faces with hoods or masks.

Demonstrators stood on the road outside the facility, carrying Union flags and chanting slogans in support of the activist. Some shouted free DT while others chanted Oh, Danny, Danny and recorded the demonstration on mobile phones. A police drone hovered above the scene as extra officers were brought in from as far away as Kent to manage the crowd.

The demonstration remained largely peaceful, with about a dozen police officers stationed between the crowd and the building entrance. The crowd began to disperse at about 21:45 after protesters learned of the formal charges filed against Thomas.

Activism and the Patriot Platform Network

Thomas, widely known to his online supporters as Danny Tommo, operates as a long-time associate of far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson. This summer, Thomas gathered dozens of nationalist protest groups under the umbrella anti-immigration movement Patriot Platform.

The group orchestrated demonstrations earlier in the month in Dover and Portsmouth, where masked men dressed in black gathered to protest asylum policies. Prior to his arrest, Thomas had advised his followers via social media to maintain silent marches and avoid actions that could trigger police intervention.

Just before police detained him, Thomas uploaded a 56-second video to his YouTube channel showing an officer informing him of his arrest for criminal damage and recklessly endangering someone’s life. Thomas said on the recording that he understood and knew this was coming.

Government Response to Small Boat Crossings

The arrest coincided with a surge in small boat arrivals. The Home Office recorded 781 arrivals across 10 boats on Wednesday, marking the highest single-day total for the year so far and bringing the provisional total for the year so far to 18,565.

Government officials noted that overall crossings remain down 42% compared with the same period last year. However, recent unescorted landings in Folkestone and Dover have sparked sharp criticism from ministers regarding border security protocols.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called the failure to intercept the vessels unacceptable and ordered an urgent review by the Border Security Command, while government representatives stated that authorities must push further and harder to dismantle the cross-Channel smuggling networks.
