Project took place in public schools in SP, with students from 1st to 3rd year

More than two thousand students from the 1st to 3rd year of high school, with ages ranging from 15 to 17 years old, participated in the pilot project of the educational circuit “Anti-Semitism: past, present and future”, with the aim of giving them tools to the fight against prejudice, stereotyping, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. The circuit is the result of a partnership between StandWithUs Brasil, an educational organization dedicated to teaching people of all ages about Israel and combating extremism and anti-Semitism, with the Reading Room Program of the São Paulo State Department of Education, throughout of the second semester of 2023. The circuit’s activities were planned in accordance with the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), enabling total synergy and integration with other disciplines.

Today, Tuesday, December 12th, from 1pm to 5pm, at the Fernando de Azevedo Theater of the São Paulo State Department of Education, Praça da República, n°53, will be the closing ceremony, where all teachers will be honored reading room managers, the pedagogical teams (supervisor, PEC and sociocultural analyst) who worked on the project and the 39 students who were highlighted in the program. The action achieved all the expected results, in order to improve the psychosocial capabilities of students, so that they become more aware citizens about the importance of social inclusion and the dangers of hate speech that undermines diversity, says Márcia Andréia Reis , manager of the Reading Room Program of the São Paulo State Department of Education. “We will promote the extension of the project to all public schools in the State of São Paulo”, she states.

“This project not only enriched students’ understanding of the Holocaust, but also fostered an atmosphere of tolerance, understanding and empathy. Furthermore, it reinforced the urgent need to talk about anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, highlighting the importance of learning from the past to avoid the repetition of tragedies caused by hatred. May peace prevail in our hearts and in society”, said professor Cristiane Lacerda, from Escola Estadual Eurípedes Simões de Paula.

According to Cléo Assunção, coordinator of institutional relations at StandWithUs Brasil, based on the analysis of the historical example of the Jews, the students understood how dangerous the subtlety of prejudiced speeches and practices in society is, also directed at many other groups. “Despite the challenge of implementing the project within a fair schedule and adapting it to different school realities, the public policy proved to be successful not only due to its results, but also due to its synergy with the school curriculum and the growing anti-Semitism that we live in the current context”, she states.

“When we learn about the Second World War, the Holocaust and anti-Semitism, the topic is treated without due importance, because it is not addressed in the correct way. This occurs because the subject is considered too delicate to be studied further. ‘Those Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ This phrase by George Santayana shows us the importance of this topic being discussed in schools, so that hatred and prejudice are not repeated today or in the near future,” says Gabriel Ferreira, student at Escola Estadual Eurípedes Simões de Paula.

The first circuit worked with two thematic axes, one focusing on anti-Semitism, and the second prioritized understanding how hate speech spreads in the past, present and future. The priority of the approach was to encourage students to critically analyze society, developing skills so that they are able to identify prejudiced narratives present in different situations in their social life.
