Since being signed in 2022 for around 95 million euros (approximately R$ 576 million in direct conversion), Antony has experienced ups and downs at Manchester United – so much so that, until today, he has not met the targets that would increase the transfer to 100 million euros. Because of this, European media speculates that he may not stay at the club and could leave on loan, something rejected by his agent, Junior Pedroso.
In a conversation with European football market journalist Fabrizio Romano, as reported by the English outlet Daily Mail, the player’s intentions are well-defined and revolve around staying at Old Trafford for the 2024/25 season. However, the start does not seem promising, as he did not participate in the preseason friendlies against Rosenborg and Rangers.
“I see reports about a possible loan departure,” Pedroso commented regarding the speculation surrounding Antony’s future, before emphasizing his client’s desire. “His plan is clear: Manchester United. He wants to stay, he is focused only on Man United. We’ve already discussed this with the club,” he said.
The Brazilian also seems to have the support of coach Erik Ten Hag, who renewed with the club at the beginning of July. At the end of last season, in May, the Dutchman praised his player’s progress in an interview with ESPN: “He scored against Burnley (in the 35th round), provided two assists against Chelsea… The first half of the season wasn’t at the level he can play, but he has improved in recent months.”
“You can see the potential and the player he can be. It all depends on him. He has to work very hard in training, outside the club as well, in the gym, to reach his best version,” the coach added.
Promising start for Antony and troubled off-field matters
Antony’s start at Manchester United was promising. Shortly after his debut against Arsenal, he scored one of the goals that secured a 3-1 victory. However, throughout the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, he did not maintain the same level and faced off-field issues due to being accused of assault by his ex-girlfriend.
Last season, he scored three goals in 38 matches and, although he started the Premier League as a starter, he lost his place as the year went on, and in the Uefa Champions League, he only started in the initial 11 for one game: in the 3-3 draw with Galatasaray. In total, he has 11 goals and 5 assists in 82 appearances for the English club.
