Anyang City held the final report meeting for the ‘autonomous driving demonstration project’. Anyang City announced on the 25th that it held the ‘autonomous driving demonstration project final report meeting’ on the 4th floor of the Smart City Integration Center on the 24th and shared the results of introducing autonomous driving to public transportation and establishing a smart transportation system, and discussed future plans.

The final report meeting was attended by 15 people, including Anyang Mayor Choi Ma-ho, Anyang Dongan Police Station, Manan Police Station, Samyoung, Boyoung Transportation, and other cooperating organizations, Anyang City Council members, and Anyang City officials.

Anyang City’s autonomous driving pilot project, the first case in which a local government took the lead in autonomous driving technology, was carried out from September 2022 to August 2024 with the participation of the KT Consortium, which included KT Corporation, Naver Systems, and Daewoo Information & Communications, at a cost of approximately KRW 9.5 billion.

The main goals pursued were ▲building smart road infrastructure, ▲operating an autonomous driving control center, and ▲establishing a foundation for autonomous driving bus services.

The 18-seater autonomous bus ‘Juya-ro’ demonstration operation, which has been conducted since April as part of a pilot project, is evaluated as an excellent example that best aligns with the ‘Mobility Innovation Roadmap’ of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which aims to introduce fully autonomous driving by 2027.

In addition, as of the end of August, the number of users of autonomous driving buses day and night was tallied at 4,156, and the satisfaction survey results showed that 85.3% of the respondents (624 people) were satisfied with the autonomous driving service, and 88.0% said they trusted the autonomous driving technology day and night, confirming that this is in line with the expectations of citizens.

At the final report meeting that day, discussions continued on the development of autonomous driving technology and its establishment as a safe means of transportation.

Anyang City has the ultimate goal of commercializing autonomous driving in public transportation through collaboration with private transportation companies, and in August, it publicly recruited a business operator to operate autonomous bus routes day and night. Currently, the Autonomous A2Z and Samyoung Transportation consortium has been selected as the preferred negotiating party and is in the process of signing a contract.

Anyang Mayor Choi Ma-ho said in the final report meeting, “We have proactively laid the foundation for a future transportation system through a pilot project,” and “We will take the lead in stably establishing autonomous driving technology and commercializing autonomous driving through cooperation with manufacturers and transportation companies.”
