Anyang City has produced its own ‘city-wide high-resolution drone map’, resulting in a budget savings of 700 million won. Anyang City announced on the 2nd that it has completed the production of its own ‘city-wide unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) map’ to be used for administrative services such as land surveys and shared property management.

Last year, the city established a ‘plan to create high-resolution spatial information data by administrative district’ and produced a drone map for an area of approximately 37㎢ out of the total area of the city (58.5㎢), excluding forest areas, military facilities, and security facilities, without budget.

Drone maps (orthophotos) are data that contain image information that has been converted to an image that looks vertically at an object by correcting geometric distortions caused by terrain ups and downs such as height differences and inclinations, and has a resolution that is more than five times higher than that of satellite maps.

Drone maps are usually created in sections for each business area, but Anyang City created a map of the entire area in one piece.

The cost of producing a drone map is approximately 20 million won per 1㎢ based on the standard construction cost, but the city saved about 700 million won by using dedicated personnel to film and produce the map in-house.

City officials said, “Not only is the image quality high, but there is no shadowing caused by distortion from tall buildings, and because it reflects the latest data, it can be used to investigate the status of various construction sites within the city.”

The city plans to maintain the up-to-dateness of data by continuously producing and providing maps of drones in response to additional demands from business departments, and to establish an update plan by collecting information on the usage of the spatial information system.

In addition, the city is currently producing a three-dimensional (3D) map, which will provide three-dimensional status data that cannot be confirmed on a two-dimensional (2D) map, and will be used to calculate river dredging capacity or as basic data for various business planning stages, and to record the city’s history.

Anyang Mayor Choi Ma-ho said, “We will further advance scientific administration using unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) to complete Anyang as a smart administrative city.”
