On Monday, the parliamentary review of the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg that left five dead will begin in the Bundestag. What are the expectations of SPD leader Lars Klingbeil?

Asylum seekers who threaten with terror must leave the Federal Republic, according to SPD leader Lars Klingbeil. “Anyone who threatens terrorist attacks loses the right to stay in Germany,” he told the newspapers of the Funke media group against the background of the attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg that left five dead. The right to deportation has already been tightened accordingly. “Anyone who threatens terror or glorifies it must leave the country,” he said.

On Friday last week, Taleb A. raced through the Christmas market in Magdeburg in a car. Five people were killed and up to 235 injured. The perpetrator, a doctor from Bernburg south of Magdeburg, comes from Saudi Arabia, has lived in Germany since 2006 and received asylum in 2016 as a politically persecuted person. He has been noticed in various places over the past few years and is now in custody.

When asked why Taleb A. was able to strike even though he had already announced serious acts of violence several times and was in the sights of the security authorities, Klingbeil said: “This will be examined in detail in the special meetings of the Interior Committee and the Parliamentary Control Committee this Monday.” On Monday, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), BKA boss Holger Münch and Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Vice President Sinan Selen are expected in the Bundestag’s Interior Committee.

Klingbeil said he expected everything to come to the table that would help clarify the matter. “The Interior Minister of Saxony-Anhalt has many questions to answer,” he said, referring to department head Tamara Zieschang (CDU). “For example, why the security concept was not implemented correctly on site. It is clear to me: We have to clarify quickly, consistently and mercilessly what went wrong.” According to the SPD federal chairman, he is generally in favor of better equipping the security authorities with technology and personnel so that they can deal with threats better.

At the same time, Klingbeil warned against mixing security issues with migration issues. “I warn against increasing the antagonism in this society. Alice Weidel and the AfD are trying to exploit the attack in Magdeburg for their right-wing agitation.” They failed to mention that the perpetrator himself shared AfD ideology. “The clinic in Magdeburg gave the right answer: people from over 20 nations worked together to care for the victims and injured,” said the SPD leader.
