The vast majority of people packed into Chicago’s United Center Monday night did not belong to the left wing of the Democratic Party. We are thinking in particular of the nearly 5,000 delegates, all of whom voted for Joe Biden during the caucuses and primaries, with few exceptions, and of the executives, organizers and assistants who still identify with the President. However, all these beautiful people are welcome to a leader of this left wing, in this case Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is superior in intensity through which is reserved for Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, and again.

“AOC!” AOC! AOC! ”, the crowd started chanting when the representative from New York came on stage. His mere presence seemed to act as an electric shock to all the viewers. And the 34-year-old politician made a speech that lived up to this acceptance.

“I am here tonight because America has a rare and precious opportunity before it,” he said at the beginning of his speech. “With Kamala Harris, we have an opportunity to elect a president who is for the middle class because she is from the middle class. »

He contrasted this with the Republican presidential candidate: “Donald Trump would sell this country for a dollar if it meant lining his pockets and fattening the palms of his Wall Street friends.” For my part, I’m tired of hearing that the two-bit buster saw himself more as a country woman who fights every day to help the workers rise. »

He also attacked Republicans who told him to return to the job he did before he was elected to the House of Representatives at the age of 28: a waiter in a restaurant.

“There is nothing wrong with working for a living. Imagine having leaders who understand that,” he said.

That said, the AOC should not have made any friends within the left by defending Kamala Harris’s position on the Gaza issue. “He is working tirelessly to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and bring hostages home,” he said, not mentioning the explosive issue of US arms sales to Israel.

This statement from AOC says a lot about his pragmatism and perhaps also about his future aspirations. Didn’t he tell his mother when he was young that he saw himself one day as the President of the United States?
