(ANSA) – MASSA (MASSA CARRARA), JULY 18 – Rare cardiac surgery at the Ospedale del Cuore di Massa (Massa Carrara) where one of the first documented cases in the world of surgery on the ascending aorta and aortic valve was performed without surgically ‘opening’ the patient’s chest. The surgery, performed by the Aortic Team of the Monasterio Foundation and treated as endovascular surgery, was designed with a procedure capable of reducing pain and any post-surgical complications.
Three small holes through the arteries to reach the heart, explained by Fondazione Monasterio, allowed the positioning of an endoprosthesis in the ascending aorta and the release of an aortic valve, so as to treat the two critical issues in the same session. The operation was performed by doctors Antonio Rizza, Cataldo Palmieri and Tommaso Gasbarri together with Dr. Giovanni Credi, head of Vascular Surgery at the Apuane Hospital. Also present in the room were doctors Anees Ali Ahmed Al Jabri and Marcello Ravani.
“Monasterio has dedicated itself in recent years to the treatment of the most complex and difficult to manage aortic pathologies – comments Rizza – offering the patient every type of surgical intervention. The technique used in this intervention, called Endo-Bentall from the name of the English heart surgeon Hugh Bentall, is an example of this. Today we are able to treat even patients excluded from traditional surgery”. “The Aortic Team and the intervention performed – adds the general manager of Monasterio, Marco Torre – are a perfect synthesis of multidisciplinary work, networking with other companies of the Regional Health System and personalized care. The team was born from the joint action of different professionals and from the precious collaboration with colleagues from the health company Usl Toscana Nord Ovest. With our Aortic Team and ASL the path taken together is marked by continuous steps of improvement”. (ANSA).
