The University of Arizona solidified its position atop the Associated Press men’s college basketball Top 25 poll on Monday, receiving an overwhelming 60 of 61 first-place votes. The Wildcats (16-0, 3-0 Big 12) have begun the season with an unblemished record, further extending their dominance after Michigan’s first loss of the season on Saturday to Wisconsin.
Arizona’s continued success has been underscored by a surge in support from voters, gaining 28 additional first-place votes this week. The team’s consistent performance is setting a high bar for competitors as the season progresses.
Shifting Landscape Behind the Wildcats
Iowa State (16-0, 3-0 Big 12) moved up to second place, matching its highest ranking in program history, demonstrating the strength of the Big 12 conference. UConn (16-1, 6-0 Big East) climbed to No. 3, while Michigan fell to No. 4 and Purdue (15-1, 5-0 Big Ten) rounded out the top five.
However, the most significant movement outside the top five came from Vanderbilt, which jumped from 11th to 10th. This marks the first time since 1993 the Commodores (16-0, 3-0 SEC) have cracked the top 10. “Vanderbilt is looking like a legitimate top-10 team,” one analyst noted, citing their impressive 13 double-digit victories this season and a current No. 5 ranking at KenPom.
Virginia Makes a Notable Climb, New Faces Enter the Poll
Virginia (14-2, 3-1 ACC) experienced the biggest leap in the poll, ascending seven spots to No. 16 following victories over Cal and Stanford. The bottom of the Top 25 also saw considerable change, with Iowa, Kansas, SMU, and UCF being removed, replaced by Florida (No. 19), Clemson (No. 22), Utah State (No. 23), and Seton Hall (No. 25).
Rising Stars and Underrated Contenders
Beyond the top of the poll, Nebraska and Vanderbilt continue to impress. Nebraska secured two crucial Quad-1 road wins against Ohio State and Indiana, building a strong resume with nine top-100 victories and wins over ranked opponents Illinois and Michigan State.
The poll also sparked debate about potential underestimation of Illinois. Since a strategic shift in the lineup – moving freshman Keaton Wagler to point guard after a loss to UConn – the Illini are performing as the third-best team in college basketball, according to Bart Torvik, trailing only Arizona and Michigan. At KenPom, Illinois currently ranks No. 7 nationally. A key test for the Illini looms in two weeks with a road game against Purdue.
Newcomers Make Their Mark
Florida, Clemson, Utah State, and Saint Louis all entered the Top 25 this week. Florida, with a 6-1 record in its last seven games, is ranked No. 12 at KenPom and No. 11 by Torvik’s ratings when accounting for preseason bias. Clemson boasts a 4-0 record in the ACC, with three road wins and a victory over SMU.
Utah State is ranked 13th in the NET and outscoring Mountain West opponents by an average of 39 points per 100 possessions. Saint Louis, despite a heartbreaking loss to Stanford due to a late-game foul, has the third-best scoring margin in college basketball and appears to have the strongest defensive unit under coach Josh Schertz. The Billikens nearly secured an undefeated record, falling just short after fouling with 4.3 seconds remaining and Stanford converting a subsequent free throw and buzzer-beating three-pointer.
