With almost one million 500,000 pesos in sales and approximately 350,000 profits in a month, the plant for the benefit of fruits, root vegetables and vegetables of the Cooperativa de Creditos y Servicios (CCS) Álvaro Reynoso, in Alquízar, shows how much It is positive for the agricultural sector to stimulate certain services based on cooperative management.

Just two years ago these figures were unthinkable, and some incredulous bet on failure, when the Agricultural Intercooperation Support Project (Apocoop) made available to this CCS the most modern machinery for processing farm products, in order to make cooking faster and easier.

In addition to promoting an effective path towards the long-awaited local self-sufficiency, the initiative would serve as a source of employment for rural women living in the area.

And well they did! Currently, seven women and two men are capable of processing between three and five tons of agricultural products per day, coming from the 11 productive forms of the municipality.

They earn between 7,000 and 11,000 pesos a month, depending on how much they are able to do. “You have to clean and peel a lot of food to get there!”, says Yenielis Suárez Lamorú, a 28-year-old girl, in charge of this team, without looking up from her work.

Thus, with great encouragement, they bring processed and clean food (shelled and chopped) to two points of sale in Alquízar and the same number of rented markets in Havana. Among its varied offer, they are distinguished by the sweet potato julienne, the caldocín, the striped cabbage and carrot, the pickles and the fruta bomba in pieces.

Álvaro Reynoso leads the marketing line, among five main axes encouraged by Apocoop, through a framework agreement with the rest of the cooperatives in which everyone benefits, explains Leonardo Dalmao Matos, head of agro-industrial processes at that CCS.

“Initially it was difficult for suppliers to find an attractive way here to channel their crops. We then decided to improve the purchase price compared to Acopio. And so far it has worked for us, ”he underlines.

Just to create skills and consolidate alliances, Apocoop urged, when he extended his hand to see them one day walk alone on the path of sustainability.

Today they are able to close cooperative production deals with other companies, such as Frutas Selectas, whose ties allow them to acquire nylon, containers, special raw materials and other inputs that are difficult to access, since there is no stable market in the country.

They also dream of expanding the cold capacity, so that it allows them to increase production and create long-term inventories. They already see themselves, in the not too distant future, inserting their merchandise in the tourist market and on online sales platforms, as a way to generate income in MLC.

All of this without abandoning an inviolable principle of cooperativism: that each action conceived on the premises of Álvaro Reynoso accrues to the benefit of its 263 associates.
