The Memrise platform, which uses GPT technology to help people learn languages, is introducing an application on Discord. With the so-called MemBot, the idea is to allow users, for example, to interact in a chat with other people on the server to learn all together.

The new chatbot is trained in GPT-3 and, according to Ben Whately, co-founder of Memrise, is based on a more organic way of teaching languages. In other words, as if it were something much more natural than what more traditional formats provide.

Whately reinforces this by saying that using the application on Discord is like practicing written conversation in a different language within contexts that are in the routine of those who are learning. Currently, the bot can teach 25 languages.

Written only languages

There are 50 real-world scenarios showing situations such as checking into a hotel and shopping at an establishment. The bot will have a role – the car salesman, the hotel concierge, whoever. Other scenarios are much more creative, for example, one where the person meets an elderly person on the street who demands to know who he is and where he is from.

Text-only based, the app does not help with languages that cannot be read or written. For Whately, as the text is a method of practice with less stress, people end up being less nervous when practicing. MemBot can be integrated with any Discord server for free. But the company’s idea is to experiment with ways to charge for the bot, thus helping to cover the costs of developments.
