The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested international buyers to sympathize with the garment factories affected by the ongoing situation in the country. BGMEA made this request during a meeting with representatives of some of the world’s largest garment buyers.

The meeting was held with the representatives of garment buyers at BGMEA complex in Uttara of the capital on Monday (July 29). BGMEA President SM Mannan (Kochi) presided over the meeting.

After the meeting, SM Mannan (Kochi) told reporters that the garment industry has faced major losses in the current situation of the country. The marketing and supply chain involved in this sector have also suffered major losses. We have discussed with ports, Bangladesh Bank, NBR for speedy recovery of industry. We are monitoring the overall situation. We are taking all necessary steps. Presenting to the foreign buyers about the overall situation of the garment factories. I have assured the buyer representatives. At the same time, I have called upon the buyers to be sympathetic to the factories in the ongoing situation. I have specifically requested that no additional pressure should be created on the affected factories due to unexpected delays.

President of BGMEA said, in the meeting we highlighted the undesirable situation that started on July 18 and the steps taken by the government to control it. BGMEA’s measures have been communicated to the buyers to keep the normal operations of the industry going and the supply chain uninterrupted.

He said, due to unforeseen circumstances, we lost several production and export earnings during the five-day shutdown. Our marketing and supply chain have faced major losses. As a result, the factories suffered financially. A situation like this is a big blow to our industry at a time when we are trying to survive.

He further said that we have been working with the government since day one to restore stability in the garment industry. We met the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. Requested to start the factory at the earliest and ensure overall safety of the industry including the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The government has assured us of overall security.
