Pope Francis highlighted the responsibility of the Christian politician, who “must be distinguished by the seriousness with which he addresses” ethical principles and values.

Pope Francis’ audience with members of the European Parliament’s People’s Party Group was scheduled for June 9 at the Vatican. However, the Pope was hospitalized on Wednesday due to abdominal surgery. That is why he sent a message from the Gemelli Hospital to its president, Manfred Weber, published this Sunday, June 11.

The Pontiff asked parliamentarians to become aware of the responsibility of Christian politicians “to convert the great dream of fraternity into concrete actions of good politics at all levels: levels: local, national, international.”

“For example, challenges such as migration or caring for the planet seem to me that they can only be addressed from this great guiding principle: human fraternity,” the Pope wrote.

Thus, he reaffirmed the importance of “pluralism”, which is to be expected in a large parliamentary group. At the same time, Pope Francis explained that “we need to be united” on certain ethical principles and values, and for this an adequate formation of its members is necessary.

“It is normal that they also need moments of study and reflection in which to deepen and debate the most relevant ethical issues. It is an exciting challenge, which is played out above all at the level of consciousness, and which also highlights the quality of those who make politics “, wrote.

The Christian politician must be distinguished by seriousness with which he approaches the issues, rejecting opportunistic solutions and always remaining firm in the criteria of the dignity of the person and the common good”, he added.

In this sense, he insisted on the importance of the Social Doctrine of the Church as a reference to contribute to European politics, emphasizing “the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity”.

Europe’s Christian values

In addition, he stressed the original idea of the founders of a united Europe, who sought to create a space of freedom, justice and peace where diversity is respected.

“Today, this project is being tested in a globalized world, but it can be revitalized by drawing on its original inspiration, more current and fruitful not only for Europe, but for the entire human family.”

In his conclusion, the Pope invited young people who see their life on a European horizon to look, urging them to think of a Europe and a world that live up to their dreams.
