Recently retired Chief Justice UU Lalit has appeared for Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. His response was in an interview given to a national media.

Ram Jethmalani was the lead counsel in the case so it was irrelevant, he added. “I have given an explanation on this matter. He was not the lead counsel in that case. He appeared for Amit Shah’s co-accused.

Before becoming a judge in August 2014, U.U.Lalit was a lawyer in several controversial cases. The then Narendra Modi-led Gujarat government was accused of covering up the fake encounter killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kausarbi and associate Tulasiram Prajapati. In this case, Lalit was the lawyer of then Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah.
