Apple has changed its mind about disabling web applications (PWA) on smartphones running iOS 17.4 and later in the EU.

As Day.Az reports, the updated document appeared on the Apple Developer website.

“We have received requests to continue supporting web apps on iOS, so we will continue to offer existing capabilities in the EU,” Apple said in a statement. The company noted that web applications will continue to be created based on the WebKit engine using its security architecture.

European users have discovered that the website shortcuts feature on the iPhone desktop is missing in the iOS 17.4 beta. This happened due to upcoming changes in the company’s policy, which will allow third-party browser engines (Chromium and others) in iOS in accordance with the European Digital Markets Act (DMA). According to Apple, everything will return to normal with the update to the stable version of iOS 17.4 in March.

Initially, Apple stated that they would not be able to provide a sufficient level of security for web applications when using alternative engines. The network was critical of the company’s decision, and the EU authorities, according to some reports, were going to conduct an investigation into this fact. Apparently, these factors influenced the changes in Apple’s plans.
