Their worst results in the last five years. This is how the American technology giant Apple has closed its last fiscal year. Thus, from October 2022 to the end of last September it obtained a net profit of 96,995 million dollars (91,320 million euros), an amount that is undoubtedly important but 2.8% lower than that of the previous year. And this despite having recorded record sales figures for its new iPhone 15 during the last summer campaign.

The balance has been equally disappointing for the famous apple multinational in terms of its turnover, as it fell in the same proportion (-2.8% year-on-year) until it stood at 383,285 million dollars (360,871 million euros). And within this chapter, the decline in product sales of 5.7% stands out in a particularly negative way, which amounted to 298,085 million dollars (280,677 million euros). However, there was an increase of 9% in the commercialization of services to reach 85.2 billion dollars (80.23 billion euros).

It is the first time since 2019, that is, just the year before the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic, that Apple has cut profits and sales at the same time. And this despite the fact that in the last quarter of its fiscal year (from July to September) it achieved a new income ceiling for this period from the sale of the iPhone, its flagship product. In total they were 43,805 million dollars (41,238 million euros), 2.7% more than in the same period of 2022.

In its fiscal year as a whole, the technology company reduced its income from the sale of its well-known and appreciated ‘smartphones’ by 2.4%, to 200,583 million dollars (188,890 million euros). Much worse were the sales of its Mac computers – the other major support of its commercial operations -, which decreased by 26.9%, to 29,357 million dollars (27,645 million euros), while those of its iPad tablets fell 3.4% to 28.3 billion dollars (26.65 billion euros).

By geographic area, Apple cut its sales in practically all of them, with declines of 4.2% in America, 3% in Europe, 2.2% in the Greater China region and 6.6% in Japan, reports Europe Press. It only increased its annual sales in the rest of Asia-Pacific, with just an increase of 0.8%.

A positive last quarter

All in all, the positive news for the company that has its central base of operations in Cupertino (California) is that between July and September, the last quarter of its fiscal year, it obtained a net profit of 22,956 million dollars (21,618 million euros) . This amount improves by 10.8% on that recorded the previous year and also exceeds what was achieved by its main rival, Microsoft, with 22,291 million dollars.

Likewise, although the sales of this American multinational continued to decline, this time they did so by only -0.7% – to 89,500 million dollars (84,294 million euros) -, its smallest commercial decline in the entire year compared to the fall -5% in its first quarter -especially due to the decline in Christmas sales in China-, -3% in the second and -1.4% in the third. In fact, surely the best news of the year for its executives was the historical record of service income of 22,314 million dollars (21,016 million euros) between July and September, 16.3% more than in the same quarter of 2022.

“We now have our strongest product lineup ever heading into the holiday season, including the iPhone-15 lineup and our first Apple Watch models carbon neutral, an important milestone in our efforts to make all Apple products be carbon neutral by 2030,” said Tim Cook, CEO of the multinational, this Thursday.
