Apple has announced its new M2 processor, and it is faster and more economical

by time news

After the success of the M1 processor, comes the successor: an M2 processor that according to Apple is faster and more efficient than the first generation – and of course not even from Intel’s processors

Two years ago, Apple announced the M1 processor, the first self-designed processor that put an end to its long-standing collaboration with Intel. The move turned out to be one of the most successful in the company’s history, and the processor, a large part of which was designed at the company’s Israeli development center, won many accolades and excellent test results – including ours. Today (Monday) at the company’s development conference, Apple unveiled the M2, the next generation of its flagship processor, which will arrive on MacBook, Mac and iPad Pro soon.

Faster, more economical

Johnny Seroji, Apple’s senior Israeli, and the person in charge of Apple’s chip development activities, has unveiled the processor called the unsurprisingly named M2. It comes as remembered after the M1 series and variants in which M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra.

Just like the M1, the M2 series will be based on the ARM micro-architecture and will be manufactured using 5-nm production technology (“the second generation” according to Apple). The M2 processor will include 20 billion transistors – 25 percent more than the M1 processor, but that’s not the only change. Serugi revealed that the processor, or rather the SoC, will include 4 new processing cores for heavy performance (with 16MB of shared cache memory) and 4 cost-effective processing cores for simpler tasks (with 4MB of cache) – similar to M1 and architecture big.LITTLE of ARM. The memory in the processor reaches up to 24GB of unified memory (LPDDR5) with a bandwidth of 100Gbps, and the new GPU component will include 10 cores – 2 more than the M1, and will, according to Apple, be 35 percent faster than the GPU’s The M1 is 25% more efficient at the same energy consumption.

In practice, Apple promises an 18 percent improvement in performance compared to the original M1 processor, but this is not an Apple announcement event if there is no comparison to PCs. So here’s Apple boasting that the M2 processor will be 1.9 times faster than “the newest PC with a 10-core processor”.

Like the previous SoC, the M2 also includes a Secure Enclave, which is an isolated area in the system for security purposes, which ensures the protection of users’ information even in the event that attackers were able to gain access to the kernel and CPU level; In addition, the processor includes processing capabilities for neural networks, which will allow AI tasks to be performed on the device and not in the cloud – and here too Apple claims a 40 percent improvement in performance. The video capabilities of the processor allow it to support the simultaneous playback of multiple 8K videos in H.264 and HEVC standards.

Apple has also already unveiled the first devices to hit the market with the new processor and they are the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro which were also announced recently.
