Apple, well known internationally for its smart electronic products, including MacBook computers and iPhone phones, has just announced other innovative projects that aim to expand clean energy around the world. In this scenario it has been revealed that rwill make a direct investment in solar energy in Spain to help offset the electricity that customers use to charge and use their Apple devices.

In search of neutrality

Electricity, both to make Apple products and to charge them, makes up the majority of the company’s global carbon footprint. This is part of a strategy to minimize emissions derived from the use of the firm’s products. In Spain it has partnered with the international solar development platform ib vogt in an investment that will generate 105 megawatts of solar energy when the project comes into operation at the end of 2024.

Investment in Segovia

The Castaño Solar photovoltaic plant that ib vogt is building in the province of Segovia and which will be operational in December 2024 will generate a positive social and environmental impact in the region, by contemplating reforestation projects for local flora and fauna within the perimeter of the solar plant, the installation of nest boxes for native birds and the provision of a protected habitat with an area of at least 10 hectares, among other measures.

The project will use bifacial solar panels in a single-axis tracking system to maximize energy production. It is estimated that the electricity generated annually by the solar plant will avoid up to 57,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.

“We are proud to bring new clean energy to the grids in Spain to help offset the electricity our customers use to charge their devices,” he stated. Lisa Jacksonvice president of Environmental, Social and Internal Policy initiatives at Apple.
