Apple Keynote: iPhone 8 and X will not have access to the iOS 17 update

Will you be able to take advantage of the next iOS 17 update? If you own one of the latest iPhones, the question does not arise. But if your phone is getting old, you won’t get the benefits of the latest version of Apple’s operating systems. This is the case of the iPhone 8 and X, which will be left on the sidelines.

If the iPhone 8 was already the last device to benefit from iOS 16, owners of the X, released in 2017, may be surprised to be already “out of the game” only 6 years after its release. Indeed, only iPhones from iPhone XS/XS Max/XR (2018) will be able to switch to iOS 17. Additional information, no iPod, whose sales have stopped for more than a year, will also be able to benefit from it.

“The more personal and intuitive iPhone”

The iOS 17 update should be officially available next fall, after the launch of the new iPhones. A beta version may be open to the general public this summer by registering on the dedicated site. You will first need to make a backup of your device to recover your content in the event of a bug.

But why install iOS 17? “We focused on the features that accompany us every day to make the iPhone more personal and more intuitive,” said Craig Federighi, senior vice president of Apple, in a press release. The apple brand promises “major updates for communication apps, simplified sharing with AirDrop and smarter text input”.

In particular, it will be possible to read or listen to the content of a voice message live, in order to decide whether or not you want to answer your interlocutor, instead of having to listen to your answering machine afterwards. Two new applications will also be available: Journal, “an app allowing users to express their gratitude”, and StandBy, “a unique way to view certain information when the iPhone is placed and charged”.
