Apple (NASDAQ:) kicked off its annual developer conference on Monday. Although the day’s attention should focus on the headset with virtual reality technology to be announced, the company has already shown other releases, including software resources for the iPhone.

Apple introduced a new app called Journal to help users write about their day, including instructions for “practicing gratitude” and technology to capture moments in photos or travel experiences.

Apple’s iOS 17 has a slew of updates to help improve communication features in the Phone, FaceTime and Messaging apps, like new artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to improve keyboard typing.

In the phone app, Apple is giving users the ability to show personalized images of the caller that appear on the other user’s phone. Apple will also start transcribing live voice messages with artificial intelligence.

In the FaceTime app, users will be able to leave video messages. And in the messaging app, Apple will let users check in to make sure someone is home.

Apple has introduced a new mode called StandBy, whereby users will be able to place the phone on its side to display a special screen that can be placed, for example, next to the user’s bed. In StandBy mode, Apple will display a clock, schedule information and photos.

The company has also released a 15-inch MacBook Air, which has an M2 chip and will retail for $1,299. The company unveiled further upgrades to its M-series chips in other Mac products, also aimed at professional users.
