Apple Launches iPhone 18 Pro With A20 Pro Chip and Improved Cooling

Apple has launched its latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 18 Pro, arriving alongside a staggered release schedule under leadership that includes John Ternus and outgoing CEO Tim Cook. Physically, the new device measures 150.0 by 71.9 by 8.8 millimetres and weighs 211 grams, featuring an aluminum frame and a Ceramic Shield glass front. It maintains compatibility with previous-generation accessories, as iPhone 17 Pro cases will fit the updated phone.

Design, Display, and the Staggered Release Schedule

Placing the new device next to last year’s pro-grade model reveals few external differences aside from new color options. Alongside a burgundy variant, Apple introduced a hue called glacier, which reviewers describe as a shade darker than the MacBook Air’s sky blue and a touch lighter than the ultramarine finish on the iPhone 16. The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned to occupy slightly less screen space while adding a third live activity. The display itself is a 6.3-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10, Dolby Vision, a resolution of 1206 by 2622 pixels at 460 ppi, and a peak brightness of 3000 nits, protected by an anti-reflective coating.

Performance and the A20 Pro Chip

Under the hood, the device is powered by the in-house A20 Pro chip built on a 2-nanometre process. Directed by Johny Srouji, Apple’s silicon team has packed the processor with a new CPU, a seven-core GPU, and a dual neural engine. According to Apple, the chip doubles compute power and delivers 40 percent faster graphics, with memory configurations offering 12GB of RAM paired with NVMe storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.

Reviewers note that while the headline numbers are substantial, everyday users upgrading from an iPhone 17 Pro may not notice a dramatic difference in routine tasks since previous generations were already fast. However, the graphics improvement benefits mobile gamers and heavy computational photography workflows. The secondary neural engine points toward future capabilities involving on-device AI and real-time video processing. For European Union users, however, the smarter Siri features bundled with iOS 27 are temporarily unavailable due to ongoing regulatory discussions concerning third-party assistant access.

Thermal Management and Battery Improvements

To handle high-compute tasks, Apple has upgraded its internal cooling architecture. Building on the vapor chamber introduced in the previous generation, the iPhone 18 Pro Max features a redesigned vapor chamber with a surface area wider by three times compared to its predecessor. This wider cooling surface allows the chip to run cooler for longer periods during intensive workloads.

This thermal efficiency contributes directly to power longevity. The device carries a 4056mAh battery (though eSIM-only model capacities remain officially unconfirmed) and supports wired charging via PD3.2 and AVS protocols, reaching 50 percent charge in 15 minutes, alongside 25W wireless MagSafe or Qi2 charging. Apple reports that the Max variant delivers up to six hours longer video playback than its predecessor entirely through chip and thermal efficiency rather than a larger physical cell.

Camera Upgrades and Controls

The rear camera layout retains a triple-48MP configuration, accompanied by an 18MP front-facing camera. The primary rear shooter introduces a significant hardware update: a variable aperture ranging from f/1.5 to f/4.0. This physical adjustability gives photography enthusiasts greater control over depth of field and low-light performance.

Inside the built-in Camera app, Apple has expanded user customizability by introducing texture options—film, glow, soft skin, and standard—allowing users to achieve warmer, film-like aesthetics without relying on third-party applications. Video capabilities include 4K recording up to 120fps, 10-bit HDR, Dolby Vision HDR, ProRes RAW, and Apple Log 2.
