Apple Launches New News+ Emoji Game for World Emoji Day

by Priyanka Patel

On Thursday, Apple introduced a new game called Emoji Game to its Apple News+ subscription service. This addition brings the total number of word and number puzzles available to subscribers in the U.S. and Canada to three.

The objective of Emoji Game is to decipher word phrases using a collection of emojis, including custom-created Genmoji. For instance, a sample game presented a five-letter word puzzle where the emoji combination 😴💭 was correctly interpreted as “dream.” Players aim to complete phrases with the fewest moves possible; hints are available but count as a move. One particular clue paid tribute to the tech company’s founder, using emojis for a black turtleneck, jeans, an apple, and an iPhone to represent “Jobs.”

Emoji Game Offers Daily Challenges

Emoji Game functions as a daily puzzle. Once completed, players must wait until the next day for a new game. Scores are recorded on Game Center, allowing users to compare their progress with others. Results can be easily shared via Mail, Messages, and social media platforms. Subscribers also have the option to revisit and play past games if they miss a day.

This new emoji-centric challenge was initially noticed within the iOS 26 beta following WWDC. While its release was anticipated for September, Apple has made it available sooner. The public beta of iOS 26 is expected to launch next week.

  • Apple News+ subscribers can now play the new Emoji Game.
  • The game challenges users to solve word phrases using emojis.
  • It is a daily game with scores tracked on Game Center.
  • The launch coincides with World Emoji Day.

Celebrating World Emoji Day

The debut of Emoji Game aligns perfectly with World Emoji Day, an observance established 11 years ago. This day celebrates all things emoji, featuring events like the World Emoji Awards and a sing-along to the World Emoji Day anthem. People often mark the occasion by dressing as their favorite emojis. An attempt to write this paragraph solely in emojis proved to be quite the challenge.
