Apple M5 Pro & Max MacBook Pro: Specs, Price & Release Date

by Priyanka Patel

Apple on Tuesday unveiled the latest iterations of its MacBook Pro, powered by the new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, promising significant performance gains and enhanced AI capabilities. The release, following the launch of the M5-based MacBook Pro 14 in late 2025, continues Apple’s pattern of delivering more powerful versions of its professional laptops. The new chips introduce a novel “Fusion” architecture, combining two dies to scale the system-on-a-chip (SoC) rather than linking multiple SoCs, and Apple is also releasing an M5 model of the MacBook Air.

The updated MacBook Pros boast improvements in connectivity and battery life – now rated for up to 24 hours – while maintaining the same physical design as the previous M4 Pro and M4 Max models. While rumors have circulated about future MacBook Pros featuring OLED or touchscreen displays, those advancements remain on the horizon, according to reports.

New ‘Fusion’ Architecture Boosts Performance

At the heart of the new MacBook Pros are the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Apple’s “Fusion” architecture represents a shift in how it scales performance, combining two dies to create a more powerful SoC. This approach allows for greater flexibility in scaling the GPU, which is experiencing rapidly growing demand due to the rise of AI and graphics-intensive applications. According to Apple, the new chips deliver up to 4x AI performance compared to the previous generation and up to 8x AI performance compared to M1 models.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max feature a new CPU with what Apple calls the “world’s fastest CPU core,” alongside a next-generation GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each core. They also offer higher unified memory bandwidth, further enhancing performance. The chips also incorporate an N1 networking chip, bringing support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for improved wireless connectivity.

Specifications and Pricing

The M5 Pro and M5 Max offer varying configurations to suit different professional needs. Here’s a breakdown of the key specifications:

M5 Pro and M5 Max Specs

Pricing for the new MacBook Pros starts at $2,199 for the 14-inch model with the M5 Pro, and $2,699 for the 16-inch version with the M5 Pro. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Max begins at $3,599, while the 16-inch model with the M5 Max is priced at $3,899. Preorders begin tomorrow, March 4, with shipping starting on March 11.

Core Architecture Changes and AI Acceleration

Apple has also refined its CPU core architecture, renaming “Performance” cores to “Super” cores to reflect their increased speed. The “Performance” cores now function as a more balanced alternative to the efficiency cores, prioritizing power efficiency without sacrificing significant performance. This change, along with the Neural Engine’s enhanced capabilities, aims to accelerate AI-driven tasks like image and video generation. The Neural Engine is designed to handle the complex mathematical computations required for these applications, complementing the GPU’s processing power.

The new laptops also feature up to 2x faster SSD performance and start with 1TB of storage for the M5 Pro and 2TB for the M5 Max, addressing a common request from professional users for increased storage capacity. The MacBook Pro continues to offer a Liquid Retina XDR display, a 12MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality mics, and a six-speaker sound system.

Apple’s latest MacBook Pro models represent a significant step forward in performance and efficiency for professional users. With the introduction of the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and the innovative “Fusion” architecture, these laptops are poised to handle demanding workloads and unlock new possibilities in AI-powered creative workflows.

Customers can pre-order the new MacBook Pro models starting tomorrow, March 4, and shipments will begin on March 11. For more information and detailed specifications, visit Apple’s Newsroom.
