Apple Music Unveils Mineral Oil Rebrand in iOS 27.2 Beta

Apple Music users face a monochrome app icon and new subscription typography in the iOS 27.2 update as Apple overhauls the service with a tactile rebrand shaped entirely by sound waves and mineral oil.

Fred Again And Mineral Oil Shape A Sound-Built Rebrand

Apple Music has given its interface a complete visual and sonic overhaul, marking the service’s first major rebrand since its launch in 2015. Developed alongside the design agency TBWAMedia Arts Lab, the new identity is built around the core concept of being made by sound, departing from traditional visual-first branding according to Marketing-Interactive.

To create the assets, British music producer Fred Again and the studio NEST Acoustics composed an original piece of music unveiled on October 21, 2026. The production team ran individual notes through a transducer—a device that converts audio signals into physical vibrations—placed inside a shallow glass tank filled with high-viscosity mineral oil as reported by Ars Technica. An Apple Music emblem was carved into the glass base beneath the liquid, and cameras captured the resulting ripples, waves, and refractions in real time as detailed by TechEBlog.

The companion film documenting the creative process was directed by Joe Jackson. Optical Arts produced the project, Time Based Arts handled visual effects, Trafik looked after the color and finishing, and Model Citizen mixed the music.

iOS 27.2 Beta Tests Draw Swift User Pushback

Released on October 13, 2026, the fourth developer beta of iOS 27.2 replaced the familiar red background and white musical notes with a stark black-and-white design noted Cult of Mac.

Social media reaction was critical. X user @tylerdotmp4 characterized the new app icon as potentially the worst change made to iOS in the last 10 years, while @ParkerOrtolani called it maybe the craziest icon change they’ve ever done. Quinn Nelson, known as @SnazzyLabs, added, I changed my mind: this is more disappointing than a $300 Apple TV. The visual stripping extends past the home screen icon.

BigGo Finance reported that home screen widgets have abandoned their pink and red backdrops for solid black, the in-app tab bar swapped its red tint for blue, and library menus for albums, artists, and playlists were converted to a monochrome presentation.

Typography And Software Rollout Updates

Beyond the app icon, the rebrand restructures Apple Music’s typography and web presence. The updated wordmark pairs the standard Apple symbol with a heavier, tightly spaced lowercase music set in a customized version of SF Pro noted TechEBlog. Plau managed the type design consultation and vector logo reconstruction for the refreshed typography.

The branding first appeared publicly in September during marketing for Apple Music Hall, a live music venue in London, before migrating to the official website and software betas according to MacRumors.

Apple is rolling out the complete set of updates across websites, marketing channels, and original programming this week, with final public software releases for iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 expected next week as MacRumors outlined. While the monochrome icon remains the default in testing builds, Apple has included a Clear version of the icon that allows users to apply custom tinting options on their home screens reported BigGo Finance. Apple Music itself remains available either as a standalone subscription priced at $11.99 per month or as a component of the Apple One bundle.

Will further color adjustments arrive before the public launch?
