Apple is preparing a comprehensive overhaul of its entire Mac lineup, with new models featuring advanced M6 chips slated for release between this fall and 2027. The company aims to capture rising demand for AI-capable hardware, even as it manages significant supply chain constraints and increased production costs for memory components.
An Overhaul Driven by AI Demand
Seeking to capitalize on a growing market for artificial intelligence-powered computing, Apple is planning a complete refresh of its Mac product family. According to reporting from Bloomberg, the technology giant intends to update every Mac model currently in its catalog. This massive hardware transition will span the remainder of this year and continue throughout 2027.
The update cycle is set to begin with a new low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro, which will be among the first devices to utilize Apple’s new M6 processor. Alongside the laptops, the company is preparing its first new iMacs in two years. These updates are intended to serve users who run computing-intensive AI agents, a demographic that has fueled a recent resurgence in Mac sales, as noted by PYMNTS.
Supply Chain Constraints and Pricing Pressures
The ambitious refresh comes at a difficult time for Apple’s manufacturing operations. A persistent shortage of memory chips has strained the company’s ability to meet consumer interest, leading to significant shipping delays. Customers currently face wait times of at least three months for specific Mac mini and Mac Studio models.
Apple CEO Tim Cook previously indicated that achieving a balance between supply and demand for these machines could take several months.
These manufacturing hurdles have also impacted the company’s bottom line. In June, Apple implemented price increases across several product lines, though the iPhone was notably excluded from these hikes.
Cook has publicly addressed the financial strain, attributing the rising costs to the unprecedented expense of memory components.
New Leasing Program to Support Upgrades
To help consumers manage the costs of these new, more expensive devices, Apple is launching a new leasing service known as Apple Upgrade. The program is designed to operate similarly to a vehicle lease, allowing users to cycle through hardware more frequently without the burden of full retail ownership.
The service, which covers most iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch models, is expected to debut next week. It offers users flexibility in how they handle their devices at the end of a term.
Users can pay off devices early in their term, upgrade earlier to newer models, or keep the original device until the leasing period ends,
As with a car lease, the device could be returned when the term is up.
Market Outlook and Sustained Growth
Despite the challenges posed by chip shortages and elevated production costs, the Mac business remains a bright spot for Apple. Sales are currently forecast to increase for the third straight year.
