Apple plans to unveil a new smart home display codenamed J490 alongside an updated HomePod mini and a new Apple TV 4K on October 13, 2026, anchoring its hardware around updated Siri artificial intelligence capabilities.
Following September releases that brought the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro models, AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12, and Apple Watch Ultra 4, internal planning details indicate an upcoming push centered on smart home products.
The product announcements are reportedly slated for October 13, 2026.
Apple Prepares J490 Smart Display
The headline device of the upcoming release is a dedicated smart home hub known internally as J490, which has also been referred to in tech media as the Home Hub or HomePad. ZDNET noted that the device lacks volume or power buttons, comes in Apple’s standard gray aluminum finish, includes a USB-C port for power, and features a single FaceTime camera on the front.
The hardware is built without an internal battery, meaning it has to be plugged in at all times as detailed by Macworld. The operating system, appearing repeatedly in leaks as homeOS, blends elements from iOS, watchOS, and tvOS, utilizing large widgets, clocks, photos, and quick access to apps including Calendar, Messages, Photos, FaceTime, Notes, Reminders, Music, and Podcasts.
A central feature of the hub is multi-user personalization.
When a user walks up, for example, the device will show that person’s contacts, messages, calendar appointments, notes and preferred app layout.
Spyglass reporting
To secure personal data, the hub utilizes voice recognition and facial recognition to recognize who is speaking or approaching, though reports noted that the facial recognition is less secure than the Face ID system on the iPhone. Earlier Bloomberg reporting cited by tech publications puts the anticipated price point around $350, alongside a second version under development featuring a larger screen on a robotic arm with 360 degrees of freedom.
Apple Refreshes HomePod Mini and Apple TV 4K
Alongside the new smart display, Apple is preparing hardware updates for two existing product lines that have seen long gaps between refreshes.
The updated HomePod mini will retain its original shape and design while introducing new color options, specifically pink, green, blue, white, and black, as reported by ZDNET and MacRumors.

The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K marks the first major update to the set-top box in four years. According to Geeky Gadgets, the new unit will feature an A19 or A19 Pro processor and Apple Intelligence support, requiring a RAM boost to support AI features alongside the Apple N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 connectivity while retaining its current product design.
Apple Integrates Siri AI in Smart Home
Forkast pointed out that Apple has been resistant to launching these home products without a satisfactory version of the virtual assistant to run on them, as previous efforts were held back by a lackluster Siri.
This strategy relies on hardware-bundled intelligence rather than recurring service fees. Forkast highlighted that competitors utilize subscription models or freemium structures, whereas Apple is positioning its devices around end-to-end encryption, anonymous IDs, and a subscription-free model.
Market analysts note that the launch carries distinct challenges regarding user utility. Macworld observed that potential customers will question what the device is for, how it fits into daily life, and what proportion of users actually utilize home automation features enough to warrant a dedicated shared display in the home.
