Spotify users will no longer be able to control the music volume on their iPhone using the side buttons. The streaming provider says Apple is to blame.
For Spotify members with an iPhone, something fundamental will change from the beginning of September: You will no longer be able to adjust the volume of the devices connected to your smartphone via Spotify Connect using the iPhone buttons. The streaming service announced this in a blog entry.
The reason: Apple deactivated the interface that allowed Spotify to access the side buttons on the phone. The iPhone company denied the streaming service access to the technology that allows Apple’s own service “Apple Music to be played on third-party devices.”
This can lead to numerous errors during music playback when using the side buttons. The streaming provider is working with Apple on a solution to the problem. Spotify does not specify a time frame.
Until then, Spotify users can use the service’s app to “easily control the volume on their connected device.” This works via a slider, which makes this option significantly more complicated than the previous one.
According to the US magazine “The Verge”, the change will come into effect on September 3rd. However, some iPhone users have already reported that they can no longer change the volume of their devices using the phone buttons, it is said.
Instead, Spotify displays a notification on the smartphone. It says: “Would you like to change the volume?” Users then have to tap on this notification and are then redirected to the volume control displayed in the Spotify app. If the app is already open, the control will automatically appear when the buttons are pressed.
