Apple has struck what’s being called an “unprecedented” deal for the rights to adapt the epic fantasy works of Brandon Sanderson, potentially launching the tech giant’s first major foray into the fantasy genre.

Apple Eyes First Fantasy Franchise

the Hollywood Reporter revealed that Apple secured the rights to Sanderson’s “Cosmere” universe in a highly competitive situation, with the author meeting with heads of most major studios.

“[The deal] gives the author rarefied control over the screen translations of his fantasy novels. The author maintains important creative control over his worlds, a rarity in adaptations.”

According to The hollywood Reporter, the initial adaptations will focus on the Mistborn series as feature films and The Stormlight Archive as a television series, with producers already attached to the latter.

The potential for a major franchise is substantial. Sanderson boasts a dedicated fanbase of over 50 million readers, has successfully raised more than $140 million through crowdfunding for publishing projects, and hosts the popular annual Dragonsteel Nexus convention, wich he also headlines.

Currently, there’s no confirmed release timeline for these projects. However, with the next Dragonsteel Nexus scheduled for December 3 through December 5, it’s likely Apple and Sanderson will leverage the event to share updates and generate excitement.

Apple TV+ is available for $12.99 per month and features critically acclaimed shows and movies such as Severance, The studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
