The Patently Apple portal discovered an Apple document in the US Patent and Trademark Office describing the technology of placing a selfie camera directly under the surface of the iPhone screen, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.
Patent images show that the technology should ensure that cameras and facial recognition scanners located under the active display area work correctly. This will increase the usable screen area, depriving it of the Dynamic Island cutout.
The sketches also show a variant with a smaller notch at the top of the screen, where only one sensor is hidden under the display.
According to rumors, the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have the smallest notch in the series, and the Face ID scanner will be reduced. However, other 2025 models will receive the “old” version of Dynamic Island. Perhaps the new technology described in the patent will be a step in this direction. It is possible that Apple will not resort to using the technology described in the patent.
At the beginning of 2024, an Apple roadmap leaked online, which stated that the iPhone 17 would receive a triple 48-megapixel camera, while under-screen Face ID would appear only in the 2026 smartphone.
