The government has removed the managing directors (MDs) of six government-owned commercial banks together. This decision was taken by the Financial Institutions Department of the Ministry of Finance on Thursday (September 19).

In a separate notification signed by Financial Institutions Department Deputy Secretary Afshana Bilkis, six commercial banks’ managing directors and CEOs have been terminated for the remainder of their contracts.

The removed bank MDs are Sonali Bank MD. Afzal Karim, MD of Janata Bank. Abdul Jabbar, MD of Agrani Bank. Murshedul Kabir, MD of Rupali Bank Mohammad Jahangir, MD of Basic Bank. Anisur Rahman and Bangladesh Development Bank (BDBL) MD. Habibur Rahman Ghazi.

The chairman of six banks has been informed about the cancellation of the contract with the MD. However, a new managing director has not been appointed in their place yet.

MDs of state-owned commercial banks are appointed on contractual basis. The letter sent from the financial institution informed about the cancellation of the remaining term of the contract. However, the letter did not say anything about the new MD. Ministry sources have confirmed that MDs will be appointed in banks very soon.
