Washington The most powerful men in the world, Joe Biden and Xi Jinping, remain silent. More than six weeks ago, the US President announced that he wanted to telephone the Chinese head of state and party. “We’ll talk very soon,” Biden said in mid-February — days after the US shot down a Chinese spy balloon over American airspace. To date, the call has not taken place.
“When the time is right, they will call each other,” John Kirby, spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, said this week. The longer the radio silence lasts, the more alienated the US and China seem to be. The three-hour meeting between Biden and Xi last fall at the G20 summit was seen as a fresh start for relations. But after the balloon incident, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a trip to Beijing, and there have been no high-level visits since.
