According to the Ministry’s order, approval has been given to export 3 thousand metric tons of hilsa fish on the occasion of Durga Puja subject to fulfillment of the prescribed conditions in view of the application of the exporters.

For this purpose, the exporters have been asked to apply to the Ministry of Commerce by 24 September at 12 noon. Applications made after that date will not be accepted. Those who have already applied for the export of hilsa fish to India do not need to apply again, according to the order of the Ministry of Commerce.

According to Commerce Ministry sources, Kolkata Fish Importers Association has recently applied to the Bangladesh Sub-High Commission in Kolkata for Hilsa on the occasion of Durga Puja. Later, the Deputy High Commission reported the matter to the Ministry of Commerce and External Affairs.

Earlier, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter said in response to a question from reporters, Hilsa cannot be exported to India this year. However, many people on social media were in favor of exporting hilsa to India.

Hilsa has been recognized as a Geographical Indication product or GI product of Bangladesh since 2017. Bangladesh has been exporting hilsa to India for five consecutive years. Exports were suspended from 2012 to 2018. Almost every year on the occasion of Durga Puja, the Indian businessmen report the demand of 5000 tons of hilsa.
