Senegal Opposition Delivers Harsh 2025 Assessment, Accuses Government of Crisis and Incompetence

Senegal’s main opposition party, the Alliance for the Republic (APR), has issued a scathing critique of the current government’s performance in 2025, characterizing it as a year marked by profound political, economic, and social hardship for the Senegalese people. The APR’s assessment paints a picture of a nation grappling with a multifaceted crisis and alleges systemic failures in governance under the leadership of the Diomaye-Sonko administration.

A Year of “Unacceptable” Hardship

According to a press release made public today, the APR contends that Senegalese citizens are facing conditions “at the limit of what is humanly acceptable.” The party attributes this dire situation to what it describes as catastrophic management of the country, leaving the population “abandoned to their sad fate.” The statement, signed by the National Executive Secretariat, signals a deepening rift between the opposition and the ruling coalition.

Governance Under Fire: Failed Promises and Rejected Reforms

The APR levels accusations of incompetent governance, citing a pattern of “emblematic denials and failures.” Specifically, the party points to the perceived lack of success from the President’s economic tour of the Casamance region and a general absence of viable solutions to the country’s mounting challenges.

Furthermore, the APR has categorically rejected proposed parliamentary constitutional reforms, arguing that Senegal’s problems are not institutional in nature. “The problem of Senegal… is not institutional. It is economic, social and in the nature of substandard governance,” the press release asserts, emphasizing the need for fundamental changes in economic and social policy.

Economic Blockage and Diplomatic Setbacks

The opposition party denounces what it calls an “economic blockage,” attributing it to policies described as “finicky, inept and hazardous.” The APR’s critique extends to multiple sectors, including:

  • A perceived decline in Senegalese diplomacy.
  • Neglect of the education system, with schools and universities reportedly “abandoned.”
  • Struggles within the agricultural sector.
  • Widespread unemployment.
  • Increasing economic hardship for Senegalese families.

Adding to the economic concerns, the APR has raised questions about the government’s acquisition of “tens of billions” in funding “outside legal channels” within a two-day period. The party characterizes this “financial engineering” as a “scathing admission of guilty impotence.”

Political and Judicial Tensions Escalate

The APR’s assessment also highlights internal strife within the ruling power structure, alleging a “mortal struggle between the two heads of the Executive” that is hindering effective governance. The opposition further accuses Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of attempting to influence the judicial system in the Mame Mbaye Niang affair, seeking to avoid conviction through alleged manipulation of the Supreme Court. The APR has directly appealed to the magistrates of the Supreme Court to resist any such pressure.

A Call for Change

Faced with what it deems an “unsustainable” situation, the APR asserts that the only path forward for Senegal is to “defeat the power of Pastef.” The party believes this is the only way to address the nation’s challenges and fulfill the aspirations of the Senegalese people. This strong statement underscores the APR’s determination to challenge the current administration and offer an alternative vision for the country’s future.
