The company,comprised of only 30 people with a total capital base of just under $50 million,treated the training run as a “back the company” bet. “I’ve always believed that having a constraint…is extremely important for creativity,” Atkins explained. “When you just have an unlimited budget, you inherently don’t have to engineer your way out of complex problems.”

The rapid training was facilitated by early access to Nvidia B300 GPUs (Blackwell), which provided a significant performance boost over the previous generation. Arcee also partnered with DatologyAI to utilize over 8 trillion tokens of synthetically generated data, designed not to mimic existing text but to condense facts and encourage reasoning. The model’s architecture incorporates alternating local and global sliding window attention layers, enabling efficient processing of long-context scenarios, supporting a native context window of 512k and demonstrated performance up to 1 million tokens.
