The partial decarbonisation plan for the Gijón steel factory provides for the replacement of one of the two current blast furnaces with a direct iron ore reduction plant (DRI system) using green hydrogen (although initially it will use natural gas and steel waste gases until that there is a competitive supply) and a hybrid electric arc furnace that will be fed with the pre-reduced products from the DRI plant and scrap.

The environmental processing of the hybrid furnace, which will be installed in the current Gijón steelworks, has already been completed. And in December of last year, the steel multinational presented the necessary documentation for the application for environmental permits for the DRI plant (which has a reactor over 150 meters high as its most significant element) in parallel to the administrative processing process. In the consultation periods of the two projects, no “significant” environmental allegations have been received that make it necessary to make changes that delay the projects.

However, the steel multinational has not yet given the final go-ahead to the investment package, although it has requested the help of 450 million euros of European funds from the Recovery Plan that the Ministry of Industry (prior approval by the Commission Europe), granted to the company within the PERTE for industrial decarbonization.
