The burial of a Thracian warrior by the Roman troops is the significant archaeological discovery that Daniela Agre’s team found near the village of Kapitan Petko Voivoda. The grave was discovered during rescue excavations.
The artifacts were discovered already on the second day of the excavations, and according to experts, there is no analogue of them in Bulgaria.
According to Daniela Agre, archaeologists have discovered the grave of a Roman horseman, part of the auxiliary troops. He was probably a local man from a wealthy family, as evidenced by the gold ornaments and valuables in the grave. The horseman was buried with his horse, which was also cremated. The horse was decorated with a bronze harness and small gold ornaments.
The finds from the grave are very significant. A full set of battle gear was found in it, including a rare Roman-era plaited breastplate. Many metal spears and two swords were also found, one of which was beautifully decorated with silver appliqués, Daniela Agre told BTA.
Some of the silver applications on the sword are unfortunately destroyed by the moisture. A hunting knife with a bejeweled handle and an image of hunting dogs on its gold band was also found. In the grave there is also a golden wreath with petals and fruits, as well as a massive ring.
The archaeological team has also found a gold fibula and a gold necklace which has no counterpart in the country. Among the finds are a gold bracelet with tiles, as well as a toilet chest with silver and bone fittings.
“With such valuable gifts placed in this grave, it can be judged that a warrior from a rich family was actually buried in it,” says Daniela Agre. After the completion of the rescue excavations, the finds will be moved to the Historical Museum in Topolovgrad. Funds have already been allocated by the municipality for the construction of a vault. The work on the creation of this room will start soon, Deputy Mayor Krasimira Atanasova announced.
