For many years, archaeologists used the radiocarbon dating method to specify with relative precision the age of historical artifacts and, consequently, of events throughout human history, including the wars against Israel.

Now, thanks to a doctoral thesis by Yoav Vaknin, under the guidance of professors Erez Ben-Yosef, Oded Lipschits and Ron Shaar, archaeologists believe they can map the age of archaeological events by reconstructing the Earth’s magnetic field.

Basically, it is a thermal reading taken on rock sediment deposited over hundreds and millennia of years. Since each layer or artifact has a specific chemical reaction according to its origin, researchers are able to measure historical events compatible with its origins.

In Israel, for example, they were able to map 21 layers of destruction, in 17 different archaeological sites, so that they were able to observe the compatibility of reports of existing wars against the Jews over time, including that of the year 586 BC, when the First Temple was destroyed by Babylon.

“Based on the similarity or difference in magnetic field intensity and direction, we can corroborate or refute hypotheses that state that specific locations were burned during the same military campaign,” Vaknin said.

“In addition, we constructed a curve of field intensity variation over time, which can serve as a scientific dating tool, similar to the radiocarbon dating method,” he added.

Frequent wars

With this new dating method, archaeologists can now reinforce historical evidence about frequent wars against Israel, such as the one currently occurring, launched by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas.

“By combining accurate historical information with advanced and comprehensive archaeological research, we were able to base the magnetic method on reliably anchored chronology,” concludes Professor Ben-Yosef, second information from the Jerusalem Post. Watch:
