Archaeology, eco-pasture Pompeii, 150 ‘sustainable’ sheep

by time news

Eco grazing in Pompeii for sustainable green maintenance. This is an interesting initiative that will see 150 sheep graze in the green area of the ancient city of Pompeii, in that vast portion of territory that has not yet been excavated, covered above the ash and lapilli by an expanse of vegetation that needs to be maintained. It is a return to the greatest technology of tradition, nature. “Sometimes the greatest innovation is the return to our roots. Thus Pompeii, through the recovery of the most ancient and efficient traditional technology, ‘Nature’, tackles the management and maintenance of the green spaces of the site in a sustainable way”. declares the director of the Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel.

An experimental agreement for sheep eco-grazing activities, lasting 9 months, will allow in an eco-sustainable way and without any expense for the administration, the maintenance of grass surfaces, in full respect of the naturalistic characteristics of the areas, ensuring the containment of weeds and natural fertilization of the land.

It is an alternative and highly effective method that exploits the ability of the flocks to clean up and reclaim the meadows, guaranteeing savings and at the same time influencing the environmental impact. The sheep, in fact, do not need electricity as much as a machine, therefore there is no cost or pollution. Industrially cut grass normally becomes waste in all respects to be disposed of. A sheep, on the other hand, ingests the grass it chews and recycles it by fertilizing the lawn which, rich in organic matter and microorganisms, is the best insurance against flooding and drought. Completely superfluous, of course, herbicides.

From the vineyards that produce wine, to the management and cultivation of olive trees and oil production in collaboration with Unaprol and Aprol Campania, to the afforestation program with Arbolia (ancient wood of Piazza Anfiteatro and at Villa di Diomede), to social agriculture projects with fruit picking by children and adolescents with disabilities and autism, as part of training courses for job placement (Il Tulipano Association), up to the Pompeian flora nursery which reproduces species and essences according to historical archaeological references, the eco-pasture activity is part of the broader Pompeii farm project that the Archaeological Park is putting in place.

A major project aimed at self-sufficient management of the great natural heritage of which the archaeological areas are guardians and which also has among its objectives to ensure that these production activities become an engine of local economic development, sustainable from an environmental, social and legal point of view .
