Diclofenac gel or ibuprofen capsules: US researchers have investigated which treatment is better for back pain.

It is a widespread ailment that affects young and old people alike: back pain. Whether it is caused by stress, incorrect lifting or sitting for too long – when your back hurts, you want quick relief. But what works better for acute pain? The classic pain gel that you apply or painkillers that you swallow? American scientists have investigated this question.

The study, which was published in the renowned journal “Annals of Emergency Medicine,” examined 198 patients between the ages of 18 and 69. All participants suffered from acute lower back pain and were treated with either 400 mg ibuprofen capsules plus placebo gel, 1 percent diclofenac gel plus oral placebo, or a combination of both. Two and seven days later, they were asked about their pain, limitations in everyday life, and side effects.

The result was surprising: Ibuprofen painkillers proved to be more effective in relieving back pain than diclofenac pain gel. The combination of both drugs also brought no additional benefit. “The study suggests that oral ibuprofen is the better option for treating acute back pain in the short term,” the researchers concluded.

However, there was one advantage to using the pain gel: fewer side effects occurred than when taking ibuprofen tablets. The researchers point out that further, larger studies are needed to be able to more reliably assess other combinations of active ingredients and dosage forms.

As with all medications, individual tolerance may vary and should be discussed with your doctor on a case-by-case basis.

Acute back pain is mostly harmless. Taking it easy or staying in bed for a long time is usually not necessary and can even hinder healing. If you stay active and carry on moving normally in your day-to-day life, you will often get rid of your back pain more quickly.

However, if the symptoms persist for days and remain unabated, you should consult a doctor to determine the cause.
