Quads have gained popularity in recent years and, like any other approved and registered means of transport, they are subject to rules and regulations that ensure their safety on public roads and, therefore, must periodically pass the ITV. «BTI not only checks the technical condition of the vehicle, but also serves as an essential tool for preventing road accidents and ensuring road safety. Quads are no exception and must undergo periodic technical checks to travel safely on any type of road,” he says. Jorge SorianoPresident of AEMA-ITV.
Unlike other vehicles, which can be used immediately after purchase, many quads are initially purchased for racing or exclusive use on closed circuits, which exempts owners from immediate registration. However, if in the future you decide to register the quad for use on roads open to traffic, the first service will be carried out four years from the date of registration.
Once registered, the quad must undergo the same inspection frequency as cars. This means that the first inspection is carried out four years after registration, followed by inspections every two years until the vehicle is ten years old, from which point the inspection must be carried out annually.
During the ITV of a quad bike, inspectors carefully check various aspects of the vehicle to ensure that it complies with all applicable regulations. Some of the main areas of inspection include vehicle identification: license plate and chassis number. Items such as the bodywork, mirrors, steps and seats are checked to confirm that they are in tip-top condition and have no defects that could compromise safety. Plus all the lighting devices, both front and rear. Additionally, quads intended for use on public roads must have the V4 speed limitation sign properly installed at the rear.
It is verified that the exhaust system complies with the regulatory parameters on emissions and that the noise level of the quad is within the permitted limits. And the effectiveness of the brakes is verified, using the brake test bench or with the aid of a decelerometer, ensuring that the system responds adequately to different braking conditions.
Likewise, using the play detector plate, critical aspects such as suspension, axles, knuckles, tyres, knuckles and other elements are examined to verify that the quad offers safe stability and handling at all times.
