Regarding the WeMakePrice and Tmon refund chaos, consumers who have not received refunds are still at the site demanding a response from the company. Tensions are rising at the site as the company’s inconsistent responses, such as delays in refunds and surprise suspensions, continue to lead to confrontations between employees and customers who have received refunds.
On the morning of the 27th, about 10 consumers are staying at the WeMakePrice headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, demanding refunds. Police officers have also been deployed in case of an emergency.
Mr. A, in his 40s, whom we met at the scene, said, “I came from Pyeongtaek. I made a reservation for a Chuseok trip, but the total cost was 11 million won.” He continued, “I came late because of work, so there are only police officers at the scene. They are not cooperating at all, and I can’t go in or out because I’m afraid the headquarters door will be closed.”
Person B, in his 20s, said, “WeMakePrice says that about 1,500 people have been refunded, but on-site, they say that only about 500 people have been refunded. The numbers of the people who have received refunds are all different,” and expressed anger, saying, “Isn’t this just the company buying time?”
The situation is the same at Timon headquarters. Since the refund reception began on the 26th on the first basement floor of the headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, hundreds of consumers who have not received refunds are still demanding refunds without leaving the site.
Mr. C, whom we met at the scene, raised his voice, saying, “Right now, more than 1,000 people are waiting in the basement level,” and “Isn’t the media interpreting this situation too positively when it’s not a good situation?” In the Timon victim group chatroom, people are also reporting on the desperate situation, such as, “For three days, I haven’t been able to leave the headquarters site and have only been drinking water,” “I’m afraid that if I leave, I won’t be able to come back in, so I’m staying in the basement level all the time,” and “If CEO Koo Young-bae has cut off all of his domestic corporations, isn’t it basically hopeless to get a refund?”
As the refund situation worsens, some consumers who were waiting are even voicing their strong opinion that they will go to Quten Technology, a domestic subsidiary of Quten Group in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul, to receive refunds, and additional occupations are expected in the future.
Timon claims that it has completed refunds worth approximately 1 billion won to approximately 260 out of the 2,600 refund requests it received. Currently, refunds have been suspended as the Quten financial team has blocked the approval of the payment.
However, it is unclear whether refunds will resume. Kwon Do-wan, head of Timon’s operations division, who was caught on-site by reporters, said, “In fact, we are not in a comfortable situation, and we have secured funds for refunds, but it is a very small amount,” and expressed his negative stance on additional refund payments, saying, “You would think there would be a huge amount of funds, but there isn’t.” WeMakePrice has also not revealed any additional position other than its official position that it has “converted refund applications to online.”
