Consultant psychiatrist, Dr. Sanabel Akef, said that religious people are less affected by psychological disorders, explaining that the religious person meant here is someone who understands the spirit of religion.

And the doctor stated in the program (With Al-Hakim) on Al-Jazeera Mubasher, that the first reason that leads a person to commit suicide, according to psychiatrists, is the loss of hope.

“The doctor sounds the alarm and feels that his patient is in danger when he loses hope,” she added, adding that “those who know God do not lose hope.”

Sanabel Akef said that God Almighty “commands us in many situations from the Holy Qur’an not to lose hope,” explaining that “a number of verses focused on the necessity of preserving hope, because if one loses it, one’s life is wasted.”

And the psychological consultant defined the religious person as he who “knows and understands God Almighty in all its meanings.” She went on to say that “religion is not only knowledge of religious obligations,” considering that “this is half of religiosity, which is not complete without knowing God Almighty.”

According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, 703 thousand people end their lives every year, and it seems that the numbers of suicide attempts are much higher than that.

Each suicide results in a tragedy that affects entire families, communities and countries and has long-term effects on the relatives of the person who commits suicide.

Suicide occurs at any stage of life, and in 2019 it was ranked as the fourth leading cause of death for 15-29-year-olds globally.

Suicide is a phenomenon that occurs in all countries of the world, including rich countries, but more than 79% of global suicides in 2019 occurred in low- and middle-income countries.
