In 2016, Social Security acquired 181 HITRA brand elevators for an amount of 558 million pesos.
According to the IMSS Technical Council, in 2023 the authorized budget for elevator maintenance was 105.6 million pesos.
Through social networks, various IMSS workers have denounced that there are more hospitals with elevator failures.

The controversy within the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) is maintained due to the conditions of its infrastructure and there are even workers who affirm that there are more hospitals with elevator failures. All part of the lack of investment and maintenance because not enough resources are allocated for the works after being inaugurated.

The current discontent that exists has its origin in the unfortunate event that occurred at the General Hospital of Zone No. 18 of Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo. Due to an internal failure, a 6-year-old girl named Aitana died while being moved from one floor to another.

From the moment the news was released, a general atmosphere of indignation has been generated. Everything starts from the fact that it is an event that should never have happened.

Now, after this tragedy, the authorities have published their own version of the events, although up to now there are still no culprits or responsible parties.

The official explanation of the IMSS director

With this in mind, the general director of the IMSS, Zoe Robledoreleased a video in which he tries to explain what happened in the Playa del Carmen hospital.

Within what he mentions, he affirms that in In May 2016, the IMSS acquired 181 HITRA brand elevators for an amount of 558 million pesos. Each included a five-year maintenance warranty.

It also states that in the first quarter of 2022, all IMSS delegations were assigned resources for the preventive and corrective maintenance of this equipment. The IMSS delegations in Quintana Roo, State of Mexico, Querétaro and Morelos, in 2023 contracted the company through a public tender SITRAVEM SA de CVwhose contracts are valid until December 31 of this year.

An important point is that there are 180 Hitra units, for residential use, installed in 2016, which by law cannot be replaced until 2027. Therefore, it was agreed that as of May 2023 they will start with major maintenance, consisting of engine replacement and cards.

Similarly, it adds that there has been no decrease in the IMSS maintenance budget in the last four years. He mentions that only in 2023 the The budget authorized by the IMSS Technical Council only for elevator maintenance is 105.6 million pesos, which represents an increase of 12% compared to 2019.

Is the IMSS in crisis?

Now, despite the explanation, the video has not had a good reception. In fact, in the comments, several IMSS workers have denounced the elevators in their own hospitals by ensuring that the failures are constant in more units.

In addition, users have claimed that Social Security is completely collapsed. The reason is because it does not have enough capacity to care for so many patients. As a result, scheduling surgery requires months of waiting.

at the same time, the constant lack of medicines is also indicated. When it happens, the affected ones are also the doctors because they cannot prescribe what the patients really need but rather what is in stock in the pharmacies of the hospitals.
