The then Himachal CM said that on July 3, 1999, when we were in Shimla, we came to know that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was going to the border to boost the morale of the security forces. Narendra Modi suggested that we should also go. The very next day, i.e. on July 4, a team boarded a helicopter carrying essential supplies for the soldiers. During this time, Narendra Modi and Prem Kumar Dhumal also left for Kargil.

Dhumal said that we visited Kargil with Narendra Modi. Then we went to hospitals to meet injured soldiers, distribute essential items and talk to them. When we were passing through the hospital wards, an emotional moment came. A soldier wrapped in a sheet did not come forward to take the distribution material. Concerned, we kept his things on a nearby table. Then a doctor came and told that this brave soldier had lost both his hands and legs in a mine blast recently. As soon as Narendra Modi heard this, he became emotional and placed his hand on the head of the soldier.

Dhumal told that inspiring incident
Dhumal further said that Narendra Modi placed his hand on the jawan’s head and gently asked him if he was in pain. The jawan’s response was both extremely humble and inspiring. He said no, the pain is over because yesterday, we won back Tiger Hill. This shows how the victory at Tiger Hill had boosted the morale of these soldiers, even though they had to endure physical pain. Narendra Modi and Dhumal got very emotional on hearing this, they spent a lot of time interacting with the soldiers. On their return journey from Kargil, they also visited the Amarnath cave, where they prayed for the army jawans and the nation.
