Fatal Shooting Follows Attempted Robbery in Tuscan Town of Policiano
A suspected thief died on the evening of February 13th, 2026, while fleeing the scene of an attempted burglary in Policiano, a small town south of Arezzo, Italy. The circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain unclear, with authorities investigating whether he was fatally wounded by a gunshot, an accidental discharge, or another injury sustained during the escape.
The incident unfolded late Thursday night, around 10 p.m., in Policiano, a community that, like many rural villages in the area, has recently seen an increase in burglaries and has organized local watch groups in response. According to reports, the homeowner reacted to the attempted theft, prompting the three would-be robbers to flee empty-handed. One of the suspects collapsed near the local cemetery, suffering from a laceration to a vein.
“The dynamics, timing and names of the protagonists of what happened are not yet clear,” a senior official stated. Initial reports suggested the homeowner fired a shot into the air as a warning, but the possibility of an accidental discharge impacting the fleeing suspect is also being investigated. Some early speculation even centered on the possibility the man injured himself while scaling a fence. The two remaining suspects vanished into the surrounding countryside, abandoning their companion. As of Friday morning, the deceased man’s identity remained unknown.
The homeowner, currently the primary witness, was interviewed overnight by police. Arezzo’s chief prosecutor, Gianfederica Dito, also traveled to Policiano to oversee the investigation. The incident highlights a growing concern among residents of the Valdichiana region regarding a surge in criminal activity.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the sequence of events and determine the exact cause of the suspect’s death. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
