Argyris Xafis stars in Joseph Maria Miró’s stormy monologue “The most beautiful body that has ever been found in this place” interpreting and revealing all the characters involved around the dead body of a teenage boy.
Zoe Xanthopoulou directs the work of the award-winning Catalan writer and, with the unique interpretation of Argiris Xafis as an ally, transforms it into a shockingly sharp tour-de-force that deals with the destruction of beauty and the depths of human sexuality and desire.
The play
Joseph Maria Miró’s award-winning work “The most beautiful body that has ever been found in this place” (BORN Award 2020 and National Drama Award 2022) begins with the footnote “Written for an actor. His gender doesn’t matter. Not even his age. Neither is the physique.”
A teenager, the most handsome boy in all of rural Catalonia, is found dead in the middle of nowhere. On the occasion of this event, the pathology of the closed society of a provincial town in which nothing ever happens unfolds.
Paternity, homophobia, guilty secrets, oppressed lives and a song that awakens the most nightmarish memories. What is not said, leads to the annihilation of the heroes, real and existential. Alive-dead immersed in their desires and instincts, trapped in orthodoxy and stereotypical constructions.
Really, how complicit are we when we remain mere spectators of this cannibalism?
The show
Argyris Xafis under the directorial guidance of Zoi Xanthopoulos and with the award-winning translation (Eurodram Award) by Maria Hadjiemmanouil interprets Miró’s multifaceted monologue as an exorcism ritual, delving into the tragic event of the teenage boy’s murder. The characters he portrays struggle with their own desires, but also those imposed on them by the oppressive social structures of a seemingly close-knit community. The music was composed especially for the show by Fotis Siotas.
