Former captain Arjuna Ranatunga has said that Sri Lankan players should show their support for the people’s struggle by staying away from the IPL for a week.

The people of Sri Lanka are suffering due to the severe economic crisis, rising prices and severe shortages of essential commodities. The Sri Lankan people have been engaged in a struggle, blaming the government’s misguided economic policy for the country’s situation. A large number of youths have been besieging the entrance to the Adibah’s office, demanding the resignation of the Rajapaksa government. With the exception of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, all the ministries belonging to the ruling party have resigned.

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has said that in view of the current situation in Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan players playing in the IPL should withdraw from the tournament and support the people’s struggle. What he said about it:

Some cricketers play in IPL matches. But said nothing about their country. They are afraid to speak out against the government. These cricketers serve on the Cricket Board under the Ministry. So they save their place. Some young soldiers have spoken out in support of the struggle. Thus they too are in a position to do something.

If something goes wrong you should have the courage to speak out against it without thinking about your business. They ask why I did not take part in the struggle. I have been in politics for the last 19 years. This is not a political issue. So far no political party or politician has taken part in the struggle. That is the strength of the people of this country. Everyone knows the players who play in the IPL. I do not want to say their names. He said they should stay away for a week and come here and show their support for the struggle of the people.
