Arkas chose today, Friday, October 4, to “bless” us with a very important message for World Animal Day.
The famous cartoonist has proven many times that, through his drawings, he wants to refer to current affairs and everything that is happening. Today is dedicated to four-legged friends. However, after the incident in Volos with the man who killed animals, it turns out that some people do not treat them in the same way.
So, in today’s “Kalimera” Arkas has drawn two yellow eyes of an animal with a muzzle on a black background. The design is accompanied by a quote from Jeremy Bentham, “I don’t care if animals can think, I don’t care that they can suffer».
World Animal Day
World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare. It is celebrated every year on October 4, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
Its objective is to improve the condition of animals in order to improve welfare standards worldwide.
The celebration of World Animal Day unites the movement for a better place for all animals. It is celebrated in different ways in every country, regardless of nationality, religion, belief or political ideology.
By raising awareness and education it is possible to create a world where animals are always recognized as sentient beings and with kindness.
The story
World Animal Day comes from Heinrich Zimmermann, who organized the first celebration on March 24, 1925 at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany. Over 5,000 people attended the event.
The event was originally scheduled for October 4, coinciding with the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology. However, the venue was not available that day. The eventwas celebrated on October 4th for the first time in 1929. At first the institution was celebrated only in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia, where a large German minority lived until until the end of the Second World War. Every year Zimmerman worked tirelessly to promote World Animal Day.
Finally, at the International Conference for the Protection of Animals in Florence, Italy in May 1931 he proposed that 4 October be established as World Animal Day. The motion was carried and carried unanimously.
It is sometimes wrongly said that World Animal Day began in 1931 at a conference of ecologists in Florence, Italy, where they wanted to draw attention to the plight of endangered species.
Today, World Animal Day is a global event that unites the animal protection movement.
